Evans Insurance Services Inc. Blog
Hi my name is Steven Evans and I'am President of Evans Insurance Services Inc. Our office is located in Malvern, right here in Chester County Pennsylvania. We are located in a populated area and have noticed that most accidents my customers report are rear end collisions. The Insurance Institute of Highway safety reports that rear end accidents are the second most common collision (the most common being accidents caused while backing up). Additionally, secondary chain reaction collisions often occur, leading to further damage and injury.
In almost all cases rear end collisions are caused by following the car in front of you too closely. If you want to be a better driver, give yourself more space between you and the person in front of you. The Pennsylvania DMV recommends at least a 4 second following distance in normal driving conditions. A good rule of thumb is one car length per 10 mph. Keeping a safe following distance will give you vital seconds to avoid a collision. In certain conditions it is necessary to increase your following distance.
Some conditions include:
• Roads that are slippery or unpaved. Also, be careful when roads are covered with leaves as
this can be as slippery as ice.
• You are following a large vehicle whose rear view is blocked, such as a large truck or
motor-home. These drivers may slow or stop without knowing you are behind them.
• Towing or hauling large loads require more stopping distance.
• You are following vehicles that make unexpected stops, such as school buses.
Remember that no matter the case, if you rear end someone, it is automatically your fault. It doesn't matter if the person stops suddenly or is drunk, a rear end collision is an at fault accident and will most likely affect your auto insurance rates (Unless of course you have accident forgiveness). I feel that if drivers follow these simple rules, they will become better drivers.
Be safe and please don't text and drive!
