We've most likely all experienced this. Being locked out of the house is more common than you think. For almost all instances, it is simply starts with forgetting your key inside as you walk out of a locked front door. Many will leave keys hidden outside of your home, but this is very dangerous. Many burglars do not need forced entry as they know where to look for that hidden key outside your home. So how can you avoid being locked out without compromising security?
Change the doorknob
There are 2 ways you can go here. You have a more expensive option, and a more affordable option. First is to change your doorknob into a keyless version. This may seem like a security risk, but not if you own a deadbolt. A good deadbolt is a much more effective lock for doors, and normal door knobs don't add much security to this. This way, you will need to lock the deadbolt with a key every time. Just don't forget to lock up everytime you leave your home.
Another option is to replace the doorknob with a smart lock. Either by entering a code, or using biometrics, you can enter your home without a key. Just don't forget your passcode.
Hide a lockbox
If the first option is not for you, and you prefer your usual practice of leaving a key out, a lockbox is a good option. Instead of hiding a key in your front porch, which most burglars know where to look, use a lockbox. Even better, hide the lokbox from view. You will need to know the combination to open the lockbox, giving your key a more secure hiding place. And a hidden lock box is still better than one in plain sight.
Leave a copy with a trusted neighbor or family
If you have a trusted neighbor or family nearby, you can always leave them a copy of your keys. Of course, you should know your neighbors very well. This is only an option if you do trust the people living next to you. Also, you will need to get locked out only if your neighbors are home, if you want to get in right away. But seriously, this is also a good option for times of emergencies and you are far away. They can check on your home in the aftermath of storms, floods, or others calamities.
